Jon is the sales manager of the Northern Europe region. He is responsible for sales and for expanding Plasgad’s activity in the markets in which we operate.
We met Jon for a short interview
Tell us a little bit about your background, and about your initial impression of the world of reusable plastic packaging solutions.
I was born in San Sebastian 35 years ago, where I studied in a German School, started engineering, and then opting for a Bachelor’s degree in business. Last year of university I did Exchange Program in Chile, where I studied for 4 years living and working. I have also lived in Sydney, Zurich, and El Salvador working in different kinds of jobs and sectors. I came back to Donosti end of 2019 and started at Plasgad in September 2020.
Regarding packaging, I had some knowledge as my father worked at one Flexible Packaging Company (Amcor). To be honest, during these months working at Plasgad, I have learned many interesting things about reusable packaging solutions, and I changed my point of view of some prejudgments I previously had about plastics. A circular economy is necessary to fight against climate change!
What are the main challenges facing you in your new role, and what activities will you initiate to address them in the coming years?
The main challenge for me is to understand how the market behaves in Europe in order to give the best service to PLASGAD distributors and customers and also to bring new opportunities. In actual COVID situation is not easy to travel, so first I am spending my efforts in a Seminar of Plasgad products, learning about the market, competitors and different products. It was great to visit European distributors, it gave me a great opportunity to meet many important stakeholders and have an overall idea of the European Market Situation.
We are living in challenging and unexpected times, has Covid-19 changed your work patterns, and how?
I started at Plasgad during the COVID crisis so it has been challenging to adapt to the situation from the beginning. Of course, it changes the way of working that I used in my previous jobs. There is a lot of uncertainty, every week the situation changes and people are less receptive and open to do new things. It is being a long time with a situation never faced before and we have to be patient until this gets better.
What are the significant tools/elements that you believe will ensure growth in the areas under your responsibility?
The European market has a lot of competition launching new designs and with highly developed solutions. The nearness to the product and price is what the customer is asking. I truly believe that with new partnerships, good planning, and cooperation within the team we can become an important player in Europe.
It was great to close a big project in the Netherlands a few months ago. The Dutch market has become a strategic area for us. We also want to have more presence in France, where we are close by to assist end customers.
Now, after moving to the new office as the team has grown very fast. We are 6 in Europe! It is being a pleasure to meet little by little the team and work together. We have a relaxed and cool environment, as we are young and energetic people. That is much appreciated as we spend a lot of time together.
Besides your work and future challenges, tell us something more personal, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
Difficult question, I have many hobbies… Maybe my favorite is to travel and meet new people. I have been to many different places where I have spent unforgettable experiences. I also love hiking; I use to go every week to hike in the Basque Country and in every place, I visit I like to go up to the highest mountain. I have done awesome tracking’s in South America, Nepal, and New Zealand. On the other hand, I also like to dive to sea level and levitate as an astronaut with fishes. I have done great dives in Thailand, Honduras, and Australia. In Covid times I spend my free time walking with my dog Lucky and spending time with friends and family. For quiet and rainy days, typical in our area, I enjoy reading, watching movies, or listening to music.
